Biography

Gary Pisano is an award-winning author, great speaker, and teacher. The Harry E. Figgie Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, Pisano has advanced the business community’s understanding of technology and operations management, competitive strategy, product development, organizational learning, outsourcing and innovation management. As a professor, consultant and researcher, his work has spanned numerous timely subjects, including:

Competitiveness: Pisano’s work shows why reversing the course of declining US competitive advantage in manufacturing will require changes in government policies and management practices.

Managing Science-Based Businesses: As universities collaborate with VCs and businesses engage in collaborative research with academia, Pisano has devised new management practices and business models to deal with the collision of the worlds of science and business.

The Future of Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology: As the historical drivers of success in the pharmaceutical industry erode, Pisano’s work shows how pharmaceutical companies can adapt to this shifting landscape.

Strategic Agility and Corporate Growth: In turbulent environments, the ability to adjust strategies quickly is the critical component for continued growth. Pisano teaches how to create and lead enterprises that can respond to critical environmental changes that challenge their strategy.

Collaborative Innovation: As the use of collaborative modes of innovation grows, Pisano has developed a framework to help companies choose the appropriate form of collaboration given their strategic and competitive circumstances.

Pisano has served as an advisor to senior executives at leading companies in the United States and Europe in the aerospace, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, manufacturing, computer, software, electronics and financial services industries. He has also spoken widely at industry conferences and to senior executive audiences and served on the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards of a number of start-up companies.

Pisano is the author of six books and over 70 articles and case studies, including “Restoring American Competitiveness” (Harvard Business Review, 2009), which won a McKinsey Award, and “Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management” (Strategic Management Journal, 1997), the most-cited publication in economics and business from 1995-2005. He is currently writing a book on the challenges facing U.S. competitiveness in high-technology industries.
